Tragic Mudslide Claims Family of Four Lives in Narok

A devastating mudslide struck Torokiat Village in Narok County on Monday night, burying a family of four alive under the rubble of their home.

The fatal mudslide was triggered by heavy rainfall that inundated the region overnight, catching the entire family at home and resulting in the tragic loss of their lives.

The victims included a 35-year-old father, his 24-year-old wife, and their two children aged 5 and 3, respectively, according to a detailed police report capturing the incident.

Efforts to recover the bodies from the debris were still ongoing at the time of reporting.

Images from the scene depicted the house, situated on a slope, sliding down the valley, leaving behind a shattered structure with debris scattered around.

In another incident fueled by the relentless downpour, a bus carrying 51 passengers was swept away by floods along the Nairobi-Garissa Highway on the same night. Fortunately, all passengers were rescued, confirmed the Kenyan Red Cross.

The heavy rains have prompted warnings for residents to evacuate from disaster-prone areas. On Tuesday, April 9, the government, through the National Disaster Operation, issued evacuation notices for residents living in low-lying areas of Tana River, Garissa, and Lamu counties due to the risk of flooding.

The government alert cited the potential flooding of the Seven Folks Dam following intense rainfall in the Aberdares and Nyambene Hills, urging residents to prioritize their safety by relocating to safer ground.
