American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will travel to Moscow on Saturday and Kyiv on Sunday, according to reports that cite U.S. officials.
The pair are acting on behalf of President Donald Trump to revive diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war that began with Russia’s full‑scale invasion in February 2022.
The itinerary, reported by Axios and confirmed by Russia’s state news agency Tass, places the envoys in the Russian capital on 5 September for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, before proceeding to the Ukrainian capital on 6 September for talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksiy Honcharenko indicated the visits are expected after the Moscow stop.
While the planned meetings mark the first time the U.S. team will hold talks on Ukrainian soil, they come amid fresh tension in Kyiv.
A Russian drone struck the office of security chief Oleksandr Poklad, head of the SBU, though the official was reportedly unharmed. President Zelensky ordered a robust response to the incident.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the specifics of the upcoming contacts, saying the authorities would inform the public when the meetings occur.
Meanwhile, President Putin told an international economic forum that there are “chances” for a peace agreement, but he reiterated that any settlement must be agreed upon directly between Moscow and Kyiv and hinted at continued demands for territorial concessions, which Western allies have rejected as unacceptable.
The visits underscore President Trump’s ongoing attempt to position himself as a peace broker, with Witkoff and Kushner having previously travelled to Russia on several occasions but never to Ukraine for official negotiations.
The outcome of the September talks could shape the next phase of diplomatic engagement in a conflict that still sees Russia controlling roughly one‑fifth of Ukrainian territory.
