The fighting between the United States and Iran entered its seventh month after the two sides exchanged strikes and rhetoric, and the key shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since the conflict began in February. The US announced a new phase of its campaign – a broad economic blockade aimed at pressuring Iran to negotiate and to stop attacks on shipping, while allowing a limited flow of oil to avoid a global price shock.
