The Kenya Meteorology Department (Kenya Met) issued a warning on Friday, May 3, alerting residents of the Nairobi Metropolitan area to prepare for a heavy downpour later in the day.

According to the statement released by Kenya Met, selected areas are expected to experience significant rainfall, ranging between 50 to 80 mm levels throughout the evening.

The areas identified for heavy rainfall include Embakasi South, Makadara, Embakasi Central, Embakasi North, and Ruaraka. Additionally, areas around Embakasi East, Kasarani, and parts of Roysambu are projected to experience rainfall levels reaching up to 100mm.

Moderate rainfall between 20 to 50 mm is forecasted for Westlands, Kibra, Starehe, Kamukunji, Embakasi West, and parts of Dagoretti North, Roysambu, and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, Lang'ata, Dagoretti South, and parts of Dagoretti North are expected to receive low rainfall ranging from 2 to 20 mm.

In Kiambu County, estates such as Kikuyu, Kiambaa, Kiambu Town, Gatundu South, Thika Town, Limuru, and Kabete are expected to experience low rainfall. However, Gatundu North, Lari, and Juja are forecasted to receive moderate rainfall in the evening, with Juja projected to encounter heavy downpours within the next 24 hours.

In Kajiado County, parts of Kajiado West, Central, and East are expected to receive low to moderate rainfall, with only isolated instances of heavy downpours in small sections.

The ongoing rainfall has disrupted day-to-day activities across the country since its onset in March 2024.

In a previous interview, Kenya Met boss David Gikungu clarified that the rainfall was not attributable to El Nino but rather enhanced long rains. He explained, "It is the same signal of El Nino that has triggered the excess rainfall that we are still observing to date."
