US Vice-President JD Vance’s Antichrist remarks called ‘common belief’ by friend

03, Sep 2026 / 2 min read / By LiveNow Administrator

JD Vance, the United States vice‑president, answered a question on a Christian podcast hosted by Bryce Crawford by saying he would not be surprised if the Antichrist were among us and that he was unsure whether the world is in the ‘end times’. He added that dwelling on such ideas would be a spiritual distraction from his responsibilities to his family and to the nation.

Rod Dreher, a conservative writer and friend of Vance, told the BBC’s Today programme that belief in an Antichrist or end‑times scenario is "very, very common" within Christianity and among many Republican voters. Dreher said the comment should not be seen as damaging to Vance’s political standing and compared it to similar remarks made by former President Ronald Reagan, which were regarded as normal by their supporters.

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, said his focus is on doing ‘as much of God’s work as possible’ and on serving as vice‑president. He reiterated that he is preoccupied with leadership duties rather than apocalyptic speculation. The remarks come as Vance prepares to deliver the first White House press briefing since the departure of Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The episode highlights the intersection of personal faith and public office in US politics, with Vance’s comments prompting discussion about the role of religious belief in political discourse. Dreher’s defence underscores how such eschatological ideas are perceived as part of mainstream evangelical and Catholic thought among certain voter groups.
