Kenya Met Weekend Weather Updates: Persistent Rains Expected in Several Regions Including Nairobi

The Kenya Meteorological Department announced on Thursday that rains will persist in several parts of the country, including Nairobi.

In its five-day weather forecast, Kenya Met indicated that while some regions will experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, others will receive moderate rainfall.

Regions expected to see heavy rainfall and potential thunderstorms include the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley. The affected counties are:

  • Siaya
  • Kisumu
  • Homabay
  • Migori
  • Kisii
  • Nyamira
  • Trans Nzoia
  • Baringo
  • Uasin Gishu
  • Elgeyo-Marakwet
  • Nandi
  • Nakuru
  • Narok
  • Kericho
  • Bomet
  • Kakamega
  • Vihiga
  • Bungoma
  • Busia
  • West Pokot

According to the weather department, these areas will receive heavy downpours in the afternoon, with the rains expected to continue throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, moderate rainfall is forecasted for the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County. The forecast indicates that these regions will experience rains starting in the afternoon, following sunny and cloudy intervals in the morning.

In light of the forecast, Kenyans are urged to exercise caution, particularly drivers, due to slippery road conditions. "With moderate rains being experienced in several parts of Nairobi and likely to persist until the weekend, we urge commuters to take precautions," warned the Kenya Red Cross.

Conversely, the North-western regions, including Turkana and Samburu counties, are projected to have sunny and cloudy conditions throughout the day. The Coastal region, encompassing Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, is expected to remain dry.
