Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been acquitted in an assault case dating back to 2019, following a ruling by a Kiambu Court on Monday, March 11.
The case revolved around allegations that Sonko forcibly entered a property in Buruburu Phase Four, Nairobi, during his tenure as county governor.
Sonko's exoneration came after the complainants opted to withdraw their accusations, a decision unopposed by the prosecutor.
Senior Principal Magistrate Peter Ooko deemed the withdrawal of charges, coupled with the prosecution's stance, as grounds to dismiss the case.
The incident stemmed from Sonko responding to reports of chaos at a church erected on disputed land in Buruburu Phase Four. Upon arrival, he discovered that structures within the property had been demolished.
Sonko alleged police complicity, accusing them of allowing known land grabbers to destroy the property.
Despite the incident occurring in 2019, charges against Sonko were filed in the Kiambu Law Courts on February 2, 2021, two months after his impeachment as county governor.
Initially facing 10 counts of assault and causing bodily harm to nine individuals, as well as forcefully entering the disputed property, Sonko's acquittal marks the closure of the case.
This development comes shortly after Sonko's acquittal in a Ksh357 million graft case by an anti-corruption court on February 7, citing insufficient evidence.
