Kenyan sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala has brought his 2026 season to a premature end after suffering a stress fracture in the heel bone of his left foot.
The African 100m record holder announced the setback on Tuesday, saying he will miss his final two scheduled races — the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4–5 and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest from September 11–13.
Omanyala said the injury was sustained two weeks before the Commonwealth Games and has ruled him out of the remainder of the campaign.
“Unfortunately, due to a stress fracture to the heel bone of my left foot … I won’t be able to compete in my final two races of the season.”
The timing is a major blow for Omanyala, who had put together one of his more consistent seasons on the international circuit.
He opened his outdoor campaign by winning the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi in 9.96 seconds. He followed that with a 9.95-second third-place finish in Gaborone before winning the Diamond League 100m in Xiamen in 9.94 seconds. World Athletics records confirm the Xiamen victory as his 2026 season best.
Omanyala also won the Kenyan 100m title and secured a place in the Diamond League Final. He sits third in the 2026 Diamond League 100m standings with 19 points.
His withdrawal means he will miss a chance to chase what would have been a landmark Diamond League Final title for Kenyan sprinting.
He will also miss the first World Athletics Ultimate Championship, a new season-ending event bringing together the sport’s leading athletes in Budapest. The men’s 100m final is scheduled for September 12.
Despite the disappointing ending, Omanyala struck a positive note in announcing his withdrawal.
He described 2026 as “a season to be proud of”, pointing to his consistency and thanking his coach, team, sponsors and supporters.
For now, the focus shifts from racing to recovery as Kenya’s sprint star looks ahead to the next phase of his career.
