The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning to foreigners traveling to Kenya, informing them of challenges faced with electronic visa applications and processing. The technical problem is suspected to be linked to cyber attacks carried out by a Sudanese hacking group.
Government websites, including the E-Citizen platform hosting the e-Visa application, have been targeted allegedly by the Anonymous Sudan hacker group. The attack has affected the processing of e-visas, leading the government to advise travelers to obtain visas upon arrival at entry points in Kenya.
ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo confirmed that government websites, including E-Citizen, Kenya Power, and private companies' facilities, have experienced disruptions due to cyber attacks. The Sudanese Anonymous group claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating that it is in retaliation to comments made by President William Ruto on the situation in Sudan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to those affected by the cyber attack, especially foreign travelers unable to file their e-visa applications. Nairobi assured Diplomatic Missions and International Organizations that efforts are underway to establish new technological approaches to ensure continued service provision despite the cyber attack.
The disruption of government websites has impacted essential services for Kenyans, including the renewal and application for driving licenses, birth certificates, business registrations, marriage certificates, passports, and certificates of good conduct, among others.
As the government works to restore the affected websites and address the cyber attack, travelers to Kenya are advised to be vigilant and seek alternative visa processing methods until normalcy is restored in the e-Visa application system.
