Raila Odinga’s Body Arrives at Kasarani for Public Viewing

16, Oct 2025 / 2 min read / By Livenow Africa

The body of the late former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, arrived at Kasarani Stadium on Friday morning as thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.

The casket, draped in the national flag, was escorted by a military convoy through Nairobi’s main highways before arriving at the venue shortly after 8 a.m. A solemn silence fell over the crowd as the hearse made its way into the stadium grounds.

Inside, clergy from the Anglican Church of Kenya prepared to lead prayers ahead of the State Funeral Service, which will be attended by President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and several African heads of state.

Many in the crowd—some waving miniature Kenyan flags and portraits of Odinga—had arrived at Kasarani before dawn. “He stood for justice even when it cost him everything,” said Esther Achieng, a mourner from Kisumu, her voice breaking with emotion.

Security was tight around the stadium, with military personnel coordinating entry and exit points. The government has declared the day a public holiday, urging citizens to reflect on Odinga’s decades-long contribution to Kenya’s democracy.

The body will remain at Kasarani for viewing throughout the day before being transported to Odinga’s Karen residence for a private vigil with family and close associates. The final burial will take place in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday.

Odinga, who died on October 15 in India aged 80, spent more than four decades in public life and remains a towering figure in Kenya’s political history.
