Meg Whitman Laughs off Online Mockery After Photo Controversy in Mombasa

21, Nov 2023 / 2 min read / By Livenow Africa

The United States Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, found herself at the center of online ridicule after Kenyans mocked her for allegedly blocking a highway to capture a photo near the iconic elephant tusks in Mombasa.

The ambassador faced criticism as some Kenyans pointed out that her convoy had disrupted normal traffic flow while she posed for the snapshot.

In response to the trolling, Meg Whitman decided to take a lighthearted approach, acknowledging the critique and playfully poking fun at her own photography skills. She admitted that her original photo wasn't the best and invited others to share their superior shots of Mombasa's iconic tusks.

"OK, I hear you. My original photo wasn't the greatest. Show me your best photos from Mombasa's iconic tusks," the envoy stated humorously.

The online critics had various complaints about the timing and quality of the ambassador's photo, with one social media user highlighting the inconvenience caused by momentarily blocking a busy road for the impromptu photoshoot.

Meg Whitman, who was on a working tour of the Mombasa region, took the controversial photo on November 20. She expressed her excitement at being in close proximity to the elephant tusks during her visit.

The US Ambassador has faced previous criticism, notably from opposition leader Raila Odinga, who accused her of meddling in Kenyan affairs. Odinga's rebuke came in response to Whitman's comments at the Devolution Conference, where she asserted that Kenya's 2022 presidential election was the most transparent in the continent.

Whitman later acknowledged that her remarks were ill-advised, stating during an interview on November 11, "I was surprised as I did not think what I said was pretty controversial. Then I understood that many people at that conference thought it was controversial."
