Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has made startling claims that the individuals responsible for the violent protests and property destruction in the county on Wednesday were brought in from outside regions. Speaking out against the loss of lives and extensive damage caused during the demonstrations called by the opposition coalition, Azimio, Mwangangi called for a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute the culprits.
"What we witnessed is uncalled for. You cannot import people from other parts of this country to come and cause mayhem in this orderly county. That is completely unacceptable," Mwangangi expressed.
The deputy county boss affirmed that Governor Wavinya Ndeti would address the issue with the national government to ensure that those involved are held accountable and to prevent future chaos in the county.
"I believe the governor will bring it to the attention of the national executive, but from my standpoint, this is unacceptable. Kambas are peaceful people, and we condemn what transpired on Wednesday," Mwangangi stated during a press briefing.
He expressed regret over the loss of property worth millions of shillings suffered by residents and business owners in Machakos due to the criminal actions of individuals who masqueraded as protesters.
"The people who caused mayhem and destruction of property were not from this region," Mwangangi asserted.
While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful protests, the deputy governor emphasized that those using demonstrations as a cover to harm others and destroy public or private property must be held accountable.
"No one is against peaceful demonstrations, but we stand against demonstrations that turn violent and disorderly," he added.
Mlolongo, a town within Machakos County, experienced particularly intense protests on Wednesday, resulting in loss of life and extensive property damage worth millions.
"The level of violence and property destruction we witnessed is unprecedented in this part of the world," Mwangangi commented.
Assuring the public of their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, he declared, "We will not stand idly by as our people continue to suffer loss of life and property."
In the aftermath of Wednesday's chaos, several individuals are receiving medical treatment in various healthcare facilities across Machakos.
