Last Moments of Ex-MP William Chepkut & Doctors' Efforts to Save Him

Former Ainabkoi MP William Chepkut complained about a sharp pain in his leg before he was pronounced dead on Saturday, October 8.

According to his personal assistant, Kipkorir Birgen, Chepkut lamented that the leg was swollen.

However, the former lawmaker reportedly met with the Uasin Gishu governor, Jonathan Bii, in Nairobi on Friday, October 7, in the company of two other traders.

"I was with the boss (Chepkut) throughout Friday. We were also with Governor Bii. At around 11 pm, he called me to ask if I could prepare for his curriculum vitae because he was planning to meet with the First Lady.

"He also mentioned that his leg was swollen and that he will go to the hospital to have it checked," Birgen told Nation Africa.

Transport CS nominee Kipchumba Murkomen further added that he met the ex-MP at night in a jovial mood and in the company of his friends.

The former Ainabkoi MP was, however, rushed to the hospital on Saturday, October 8, where doctors struggled to save his life. According to Chanchal Singh, the chief intensivist at the Mediheal Hospital in Parklands, the doctors received him at around 8:20 am.

Singh and other doctors unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate the MP since he showed no signs of a heart attack.

"We received the patient, Hon. William Chepkut, at 8:20am. We examined him, but we did not find any signs of heartbeat or breath," the doctor detailed during an interview with KTN News.

"We, thereafter, embarked on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but, unfortunately, we could not resuscitate him. The attempts to revive his heartbeat or respiration failed," he added.

At home, his family expressed their shock following his sudden demise noting that the former lawmaker had not raised any complaints regarding his health.

Chepkut who only served for one term, previously worked at the Office of the President between 1997 to 2003. He, however, lost the bid to defend his seat after UDA's Samwel Chepkonga was declared the winner by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

President William Ruto led the country in mourning the former lawmaker describing him as an astute politician who was known for his humility and humour.

"Chepkut was down-to-earth and a witty politician who served his people with dedication," Ruto's statement read in part.

Other leaders who sent their tributes included the Senate Leader of Majority Aaron Cheruyoit, who eulogised him as a happy soul and a transformative leader. Mombasa governor, Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, on the other hand, said Chepkut was a committed leader.

"He worked for the people of the Ainabkoi constituency with diligence and commitment. He was a down-to-earth Member of Parliament, highly social and frequently caused surprises when he visited his constituency using boda bodas," his tribute read in part.
