Kenyan Youth Leader Files Petition to Halt Gachagua Impeachment

27, Sep 2024 / 1 min read / By Livenow Africa

A youth leader has moved to court, filing a petition on Friday to stop the anticipated impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The petitioner is seeking court orders to prevent Members of Parliament from introducing any motion related to the deputy president's removal.

In his petition, the youth coordinator argues that there is no constitutional provision guiding the impeachment of a deputy president. He warned that removing Gachagua would disrupt the executive branch's functionality and hinder the country's development.

"We cannot allow the less fortunate, those working for us, to be impeached unconstitutionally. Weakening the executive is not something we will tolerate," the petitioner stated. He further claimed, "My petition highlights that no impeachment model exists for the deputy president under our constitution."

The petition also accuses the National Assembly of overstepping its authority by violating Article 150 of the Kenyan Constitution. The petitioner criticized parliamentarians, urging them to focus on more serious matters rather than political maneuvers.
