Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has taken decisive action following the tragic incident at the Embakasi Explosion site by ordering the closure of all gas businesses operating in residential areas throughout the county. His primary concern is the safety of Kenyan citizens residing in different neighborhoods within the capital city.
During his visit to the site, Sakaja made it clear that this directive was essential to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. He emphasized the need for immediate enforcement of the order and directed sub-county officials to ensure compliance.
Expressing his determination to hold accountable those responsible for the explosion, Sakaja assured the public that the owners of the premises where the incident occurred would face consequences. He instructed county administration officers to shut down all gas businesses operating in residential areas without delay.
Sakaja also urged citizens to report any gas leaks or illegal gas businesses operating in their communities, emphasizing the importance of public vigilance in preventing disasters.
Furthermore, the governor reaffirmed the county government's commitment to providing assistance to those affected by the explosion. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna echoed this sentiment, stating that the Senate Energy Committee would demand a comprehensive list of gas refilling plants nationwide to ensure strict enforcement of safety regulations.
In the aftermath of the explosion, which claimed six lives and injured over 300 people, the authorities have taken swift action. The police have arrested the owner of the gas facility and three officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). A manhunt is underway for two additional NEMA officials and two drivers accused of contributing to the tragedy.
