In the wake of clashes at the Kisumu-Kericho border in Sondu that have claimed seven lives, the Azimio La Umoja opposition coalition has pointed fingers at Kenya Kwanza political leaders, alleging their involvement in the violence.
The coalition, led by Raila Odinga, asserts that senior figures from Kericho, including Governor Dr. Eric Mutai, have allegedly sponsored the ongoing conflict that has set communities from the two counties against each other.
Furthermore, Azimio La Umoja has raised suspicions about certain leaders from the national government being connected to the clashes that erupted on Tuesday night.
The coalition issued a statement stating, "Big names are behind this violence. They include leaders and politicians in neighboring counties and in the national government."
Azimio La Umoja specifically called for investigations into individuals implicated as sponsors of the violence, with Governor Dr. Eric Mutai of Kericho County singled out.
The recurring clashes along the Kisumu-Kericho border are often linked to disputes over territorial claims, with Kericho and Nandi counties asserting ownership of parts of Kisumu County.
Kericho, in particular, has laid claim to Sondu as part of its territory, while Nandi has previously asserted rights over Muhoroni, Chemelil, Kibos, and Koru.
Azimio La Umoja, on Thursday, attributed the violence in Sondu to the contentious push to redefine county boundaries, which they believe has been instigated by prominent Kenya Kwanza politicians.
"The violence currently going on in Sondu is not an ordinary disagreement between villagers," noted Azimio La Umoja.
"We are convinced this violence is sponsored by local politicians who have set their claim on parts of Kisumu County during the boundary review that is coming soon."
As the clashes have disrupted transportation and daily activities, the Interior Ministry has yet to respond to the situation. Regional governors have called upon Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to deploy General Service Unit (GSU) officers to restore peace in the area.
