On Tuesday, human rights activists rallied together to prevent the arrest of fellow activist Boniface Mwangi in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD). The activists were participating in a peaceful march to Harambee House, where they intended to present a list of protesters who had been abducted during recent anti-government demonstrations.
In a video shared online, activists physically intervened, blocking police officers from arresting Mwangi, who lay on the ground as officers attempted to detain him. The protesters could be heard shouting "Leave him alone" while they shielded Mwangi from being apprehended.
The march, which was organized under the banner "Justice for Gen Z Mashujaas," had been peaceful until the confrontation with the police. The protest aimed to highlight the cases of missing demonstrators, some of whom are believed to be victims of extrajudicial killings during protests earlier this year.
Mwangi, a vocal critic of the government, had earlier shared a poster promoting the march, responding to President William Ruto’s recent remarks denying knowledge of any abductions. Families across Kenya continue to seek answers for the disappearances of their loved ones, as the government and the National Police Service deny involvement in the abductions.
