Planning to travel to the United States? There is a new development you need to know about.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has temporarily paused visa appointments at American embassies and consulates around the world as part of a new global training programme for consular officers. The State Department says appointments will be adjusted to accommodate the training.
The development does not mean that all US visa services have been permanently suspended. Instead, applicants are being affected by changes to appointment schedules, with some people who already had interviews reportedly receiving notices that their appointments have been rescheduled.
The State Department says the training is intended to help consular officers improve the screening of visa applicants and ensure applications are assessed comprehensively and consistently. Among the issues being emphasised is whether applicants could become dependent on US public benefits.
The move comes amid a broader immigration crackdown by the Trump administration. The government has introduced a number of measures affecting legal and illegal immigration, including visa and green-card revocations and stricter scrutiny of applicants.
Some of the administration’s immigration policies have faced legal challenges. A US judge recently struck down a policy that had suspended immigrant visa issuance for applicants from 75 countries, ruling that the measure exceeded the authority of the Secretary of State.
For Kenyans with pending US travel plans, the immediate issue is therefore appointment timing. Applicants should check directly with the US Embassy and the official visa system for any changes affecting their individual applications.
Why it matters: Anyone with a US visa interview scheduled or planned should expect possible changes and confirm their appointment status before making travel arrangements.
