DCP Claims Gachagua Convoy Attacked in Nakuru as Political Tensions Rise

14, Aug 2026 / 3 min read / By Maureen Onyango

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has raised the alarm after claiming that a convoy accompanying former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua came under attack in Kaptembwa, Nakuru Town West.

The party alleged that unidentified individuals targeted the convoy during a political tour of the area, with DCP claiming that Gachagua narrowly escaped what it described as an assassination attempt.

The allegation has not been independently verified, and the circumstances surrounding the reported incident remain unclear.

In videos posted on the party’s official social media platforms, DCP alleged that “goons” attacked the convoy. The party further claimed that a bullet was fired in Gachagua’s direction.

However, DCP did not provide details on whether anyone was injured, whether a firearm was recovered or whether police had opened an investigation into the alleged shooting.

DCP raises alarm

The party said the incident happened as Gachagua and his allies toured Kaptembwa, an area that has become an important stop on the party’s political activities in Nakuru.

DCP described the alleged attack in strong terms, saying Gachagua “survives an assassination attempt after narrowly escaping a bullet by goons in Kaptembwa, Nakuru Town West”.

The claim is yet to be supported by independent evidence.

There was also no immediate independent confirmation from police or other security agencies establishing that a gunshot was fired at the former Deputy President.

That distinction is important, particularly given the serious nature of an assassination allegation.

Political rallies have faced confrontations

The latest claim comes against a backdrop of previous confrontations involving Gachagua and DCP supporters during political activities.

In July, a DCP campaign truck was reportedly attacked and vandalised in Pembroke, Gilgil, as the party stepped up its political mobilisation in Nakuru. Gachagua later accused police of failing to provide adequate security.

Gachagua's political activities have also previously been disrupted by clashes and confrontations in Nakuru. In July 2025, police blocked a pro-Gachagua convoy from proceeding into Subukia town, with tear gas fired during the standoff.

The former Deputy President's return from the United States in August 2025 was similarly marred by violence when his convoy was attacked with stones along the route from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The Interior Ministry later said investigations were launched into the incident.

Those incidents provide context for DCP's latest concerns, but they do not by themselves establish what happened in Kaptembwa.

Calls for evidence and investigation

The latest allegation is likely to intensify scrutiny of political security as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

For now, key questions remain unanswered. These include whether a firearm was discharged, whether anyone was injured and who, if anyone, was responsible.

A police statement or investigation would be needed to establish those facts.

The DCP has yet to provide further details beyond the videos and statements shared on its platforms.

The incident also highlights the need for political parties and security agencies to document and investigate claims of violence promptly. Verified evidence will be critical in separating genuine security threats from unsubstantiated allegations as Kenya's political campaigns gather pace.
