The completion of the house, swiftly erected by government contractors within a mere seven days in honor of the late athlete Kelvin Kiptum, has garnered attention as photos documenting its transformation from construction to furnishing surface. The home was officially handed over to Kiptum's grieving family just hours before his burial on Friday, February 23, 2024.
Constructed predominantly from steel beams, cement boards, and plywood, with an iron sheet roofing and suspended foundation, the house stands as a testament to expedited construction without compromising quality. Notably, the spacious floor-to-ceiling windows lack traditional burglar-proof grills, a departure from typical Kenyan residential architecture.
Entering the abode, visitors are greeted by an inviting open-plan living room and kitchen space. The predominant beige theme extends from the plush couch to the coordinating carpet, throw pillows, and curtains, creating an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. The adjoining kitchen, albeit compact, features a sleek black-and-white motif with a gray backsplash, while a modest kitchen island accommodates a four-burner gas cooker.
Adjacent to the living area lies the master bedroom, adorned with blush-pink curtains and complemented by wood-finish brown flooring. For Kiptum's widow, the serene ambiance is further accentuated by a single-seat couch. On the opposite side of the house, the children's bedroom awaits, complete with a double-decker bed to accommodate Kiptum's two young ones.
Completing the interior is a meticulously designed indoor bathroom/shower, boasting high-quality finishes in dove grey walls, charcoal grey flooring, and pristine white amenities.
The government's prompt action to construct the house was in response to revelations that Kiptum, despite his athletic achievements, lacked a permanent residence but harbored aspirations of providing his family with a home. President William Ruto's directive ensured the completion of the dwelling prior to Kiptum's interment, adhering to cultural norms that dictate the necessity of a familial abode for burial rites.
Unconventional in its construction materials, the house stands as a symbol of both expedience and dignity. Additionally, the government has undertaken the construction of a separate residence for the late athlete's father, underscoring its commitment to supporting bereaved families.
Kiptum's tragic demise on February 11, 2024, in a fatal single-vehicle incident, alongside his Rwandan coach and a female passenger, sent shockwaves through the sporting community. While Kiptum and his coach perished at the scene, the female passenger survived with injuries. In a gesture of solidarity, the Kenyan government provided Kiptum's coach's family with financial assistance amounting to Sh 5,000,000, with Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba offering condolences at the coach's funeral in Rwanda.
